In the US, the film was originally released by Sony Pictures on an anamorphic 1.85 aspect ratio DVD, with the only extra being the original theatrical trailer. It was later paired on disc with Mr. Sardonicus and included in two separate William Castle box sets. The original disc was later reissued as a DVD-R burn-on demand release from Sony Pictures Choice Collection. The film has also been released on DVD in Spain, retitled La vieja casa oscura, both separately and as part of a William Castle box set.

The Cohen Film Collection is proud to present this stunning new 4K restoration. Philip Waverton, his wife Margaret and their friend Roger Penderel are lost while driving at night in a heavy storm. They come upon an old house in the Welsh countryside where they receive shelter from Horace Femm and his sister Rebecca. He also warns them that their mute butler Morgan is a dangerous, heavy drinker.

For Mr. Pigott, 64, who has written a book about the history of the city’s courthouses, the real significance is what it says about the status of a few blocks of Manhattan as a nexus. He pointed out that Mr. Trump’s civil fraud case and defamation case also both played out this year in courthouses within spitting distance of the criminal trial. At the conclusion of his testimony today, Gary Farro referenced a document showing that Michael Cohen opened a limited liability company called Essential Consultants L.L.C., and indicated that it was a real estate consulting company. The company was later used to pay Stormy Daniels the hush money. Trump looks utterly spent as he rises at the end of the long first week of testimony in his criminal trial.

This material is dry but the prosecutor, Rebecca Mangold, is questioning Gary Farro slowly and deliberately. Farro said that Michael Cohen was eager to connect with him and wanted to open a limited liability company immediately. Farro then took steps to open an account for him and specified with his team that Cohen didn’t want addresses on the checks.

In this installment, airing on PBS on Thursday, May 2, 2024, host Kevin O’Connor and the expert team tackle a variety of projects, including brightening a dark apartment, addressing wet basements, and constructing a unique habitat for bats. As a director, William Castle never much understood the notion of subtlety. From the director of Frankenstein, a group of stranded travelers stumble upon a strange old house, and find themselves at the mercy of the highly eccentric, and potentially dangerous, Femm family. This well-performed, atmospheric thriller features the first starring horror role for Boris Karloff, as the hulking, disfigured butler.

In the countryside of Wales, several people are caught upon a raging storm and seek shelter from a mansion they encounter. There they meet the dysfunctional Femm family and their brutish servant, Morgan. As the night continues, the troubled past of the Femm family starts to threaten our heroes, mainly in the form of the locked-up and dangerously crazy Saul. Indeed, William Castle plays the film more as a standard comedy of the era – you keep thinking of Bob Hope’s ventures into Old Dark House cinema with the remake of The Cat and the Canary (1939) or The Ghost Breakers (1940). Even the Bob Hope films mixed the laughs with a number of scares but this is more of a whodunnit mystery comedy than anything that seems an easy fit as horror. The Old Dark House is one of the lesser remembered Hammer films, slotted somewhere slightly above their based-on-tv comedies and below their historical spectacles.

B. Priestley originally published under the name Benighted, and the new screenplay was written by Robert Dillon.[1] The opening title art was drawn by legendary macabre cartoonist Charles Addams,[2] whose signature is painted by a hairy hand. The Old Dark House is one of the most unlikely collaborations to emerge from 1960s horror – a team up between gimmick master William Castle and England’s Hammer Films. Hammer was a British horror studio who had established themselves with remakes of The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) and Dracula/The Horror of Dracula (1958). They went on to remake a number of other classics over the next few years with The Mummy (1959), The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (1960), The Phantom of the Opera (1962) and One Million Years B.C. (1966), as well as make a string of Frankenstein and Dracula sequels and numerous other original works. The Old Dark House is a 1932 American pre-Code comedy horror film directed by James Whale.

The second week of Donald Trump’s Manhattan criminal trial was dominated by four days of testimony by David Pecker, the former publisher of The National Enquirer, who detailed his efforts to safeguard Mr. Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. The original concerns a couple and their friend who are forced to take refuge in the house by a storm where they are welcomed by the sinisterly friendly Femm family. More than any of his other films, this allowed James Whale’s droll, eccentric humour to find its full flowering and the film is remembered as a classic for its macabre jollity.

But Mr. Trump’s lawyer Todd Blanche said his client’s actions were “run-of-the-mill” business. Nondisclosure agreements are common among the wealthy and famous, he said, and influencing an election is no crime. In the latest episode of The Rookie, titled “Crushed,” the team faced a challenging case involving two missing teenagers, putting...
